Dr. Patrick Lloyd is New Dean of Ohio State’s College of Dentistry

Dr. Patrick M. Lloyd, D.D.S., M.S., began his tenure as dean of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry August 1st. Serving as a former faculty member in the Department of Restorative Sciences and as dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Dr. Lloyd's legacy is a record of significant schoolwide accomplishments since his deanship started in 2004.

Innovations that were implemented under Dr. Lloyd's leadership included a new hospital-based general practice residency in dentistry, and the implementation of simulation technology to educate dental students in clinical practice. He also helped garner substantial financial support for the school’s dynamic clinical and basic sciences research programs, while emphasizing the importance of oral health and its connection to systemic health.

During his tenure, the University of Minnesota's School of Dentistry received the University’s Equity and Diversity Outstanding Unit Award, as well as the 2010 ADEAGies Foundation's William J. Gies Award for Vision. In his farewell remarks to students, staff, and faculty, Dr. Lloyd included among his most proud accomplishments a $10 M renovation of the school's pre-clinical teaching labs, expansion of community-based education programs, and an increase in the school's diversity through 40 new hires made in the past seven-plus years.

Dr. Lloyd earned a D.D.S. degree and an M.S. in prosthodontics from the School of Dentistry at Marquette University. His research has been published in numerous peer-refereed journal articles, editorials, and abstracts, and he has contributed to scholarly texts on the subject of oral health care for geriatric dental patients.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Lloyd has held leadership roles in a number of national dental organizations. He is a member of the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Education and Licensure, and he is a member of the American Dental Education Association Council of Deans. He has also served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Prosthodontics. Since 1989, he has been a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, and he is also a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists

Dr. Lloyd envisions a great future for the College of Dentistry. "My first experiences as a Buckeye have been wonderful, and I appreciate the warm welcome I've received from everyone on campus," he said. "I'm excited to be here at the College of Dentistry, and I look forward to working with our students, staff, and faculty as we capitalize on a host of unprecedented opportunities. Our future is bright, and our best days are ahead of us!"
